In 1919, the Pecan Tree was named the state tree of Texas. On his deathbed in 1906, Former Texas Governor, James Hogg, requested that a Pecan Tree be planted at his gravesite. His request encouraged a popular movement to recognize the treasure across Texas and the state legislature.
