The Meaning Behind the Wood
Each pen is made with piece of wood from the Earth. We truly believe that using one of our writing instruments feels different than a normal pen. The amount of growth in our lives from these pieces of wood has been incredible. After using many of these woods for over a year and doing some research on their origins. We put together a deeper meaning behind what we believe each wood represents. Our hope is you connect with this meaning and use it to grow some new Roots!

Amboyna is technically not a distinct species but is the name of the burl wood from any of the Pterocarpus species. The name is derived from Ambon Island in Indonesia, where much of the figured wood is believed to have been initially exported. It is the most expensive and sought-after of all the burl species and is used for highly decorative turnings.
Buckeye Burl grows throughout most of the Western US and in California on the Buckeye tree. It is relatively soft and light in weight. Before turning we put the wood through a stabilizing process to make it workable. The Burl is incredibly beautiful - containing burl clusters, amazing color variation, and great character. Colors can range from golden yellow to brown with blackish-blue and even red accents.
Made in Murray KY; HempWood® is an engineered wood product. Hemp fibers are broken down into individual strands and glued together using a combination of soy-protein and cross linking binders, heat and pressure. It is by far the hardest wood for us to work with.
This Redwood came from Humboldt County, California near Falk, a historic little logging town and lumber mill created in the early days of redwood logging. Coast redwood trees are the tallest trees on the planet. They can grow to 300 feet high or more. They are a symbol of strength and resilience.
Found only on the Pacific coast of North America, Yellow Cedar is the hardest known cedar in the world. Prized by boat builders, it has exceptional resistance to weather and insects as well as easy workability. First used by the West Coast Indians for their historic Totem Poles and great war canoes, it is a rare and often difficult to find lumber species. Our Yellow Cedar Burl is even more unique and hard to find as it comes from deformities in tree. Making any item made from this wood highly unique and one of a kind.
