RFK Memorial Stadium (Washington Senators, Nationals, Redskins)
RFK is a multi-purpose stadium which also hosted the National Football League Washington Redskins beginning in 1961, through the 1996 season.
These seats were removed during the RFK Stadium's renovation prior to MLB's return to DC in 2005. The seats were in service for 44 years from opening day in 1961 to 2005.
RFK was the fourth multi-purpose stadium built in the country, Municipal Stadium in Cleveland being the first. Baltimore's Memorial Stadium was the second such stadium and Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis was the third.
RFK Stadium was the last major league baseball park in the country where fans could walk around the entire perimeter of the upper deck seating bowl and see the game.
On September 30, 1971, the Washington Senators played their final game at RFK, a game they were wining 7-5 over the New York Yankees. The fans lost the game for the Senators, who had to forfeit their last contest here to the Yankees. With two outs in the top of the ninth and Washington leading the Yankees 7-5, several hundred fans stormed the field. The announced attendance for that game was 14.460. The expansion Washington Senators of the American League played at RFK Stadium from 1962 through 1971. They played their first season in 1961 at Griffith Stadium.
RFK Stadium was home to the Redskins for 36 seasons, from 1961 through 1996. The Redskins' last game at the stadium was a victory, as 56,454 saw a 37-10 win over the division champion Cowboys on December 22, 1996. Redskins played 266 regular season games at RFK, compiling a 173-102-3 (.628) record, including an impressive 11-1 record in the playoffs.
