The Official Writing Instrument of The KY Derby

We are proud to announce Roots & Jones is the official writing instrument of The Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs. This collectible rollerball is handcrafted from reclaimed oak wood sourced from the Churchill Downs Paddock.

Churchill Downs, home to the Kentucky Derby, celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2024. Founded in 1874 by Colonel M. Lewis Clark Jr., the racetrack has become synonymous with the "Run for the Roses," held annually since 1875. The Derby, known for its pageantry, traditions, and status as the first leg of the Triple Crown, has grown into one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.

We are honored to be trusted to take reclaimed wood from the paddock renovation and turn it into luxury collectible writing instruments. Each pen is unique and a piece of history.
